Understanding Pokémon card value

Pokémon card value: the factors that count

The value of a Pokémon card depends on several factors at once, not just the card’s name. This page explains what influences the value of your cards and how CardBuyer.eu turns that into a personal offer.

The factors that influence value

Four things go into every assessment, regardless of how you eventually sell your cards:

  • Language: it affects the price, not the decision. We buy Japanese cards too, but by email rather than through the online form
  • Condition: all seven grades from MT to PO. You estimate first, and we inspect on arrival
  • Edition and finish: including Reverse Holo, 1st Edition, Illustration Rare, and Full Art
  • Demand and resale prospects: how realistically the card can be resold

How we turn value into a price

When you submit your list, we fetch the Cardmarket trend and the lowest current listings in your card’s language, never from an old dataset, but at exactly that moment. That is why we cannot quote a price in advance: a price from last week would simply not be honest.

The market data is only the basis. A collector then assesses variant, condition, and resale prospects and sets a separate unit price for each card, which you can accept, negotiate, or decline individually. There is no fixed buying percentage. It would simply be wrong for some cards, because demand and resale prospects differ.

You do not need photos to submit: card name, set, collector number, and your own condition estimate are enough for us to start the assessment.

Why our price is below the trend

The Cardmarket trend is a market reference value for individual sales, not a CardBuyer offer. Because we buy for resale, our price is below it. That applies whether your card is in high demand or trades quietly. Resale prospects feed directly into the assessment.

How a direct purchase compares with a marketplace on proceeds, effort, and speed is laid out on our comparison page, including the cases where a marketplace is the better fit for you.

From value to decision

Your offer shows a separate unit price for each card. You can accept each price individually, counter, or decline. A single valuable card is enough to reach the €50 minimum offer. Through the form you can submit cards worth up to €2,500.

After you agree comes the physical inspection: if condition and attributes match your description, the price stands. Payment is made by bank transfer or PayPal within five business days.

An example

Kai sold 46 cards for €360 through CardBuyer.eu: after he agreed, he had the shipping label in under two hours, and inspection and payment were initiated within two days of arrival. His price came about on this principle: market data at the time of submission, plus a collector’s assessment.

Why is my price lower than the Cardmarket trend?

We buy for resale. The trend is a market reference value; our offer is below it because effort, risk, and margin are factored in.

Will I be told a price in advance?

No. We fetch the Cardmarket trend and the lowest current listings only when you submit your list, so that no outdated price is used.

Does my card’s language matter for its value?

Yes, language affects the price. Through the online form you submit cards in our supported languages; we buy Japanese cards as well, but by email to hello@cardbuyer.eu rather than through the catalogue.

Who estimates the condition of my card?

You give your own estimate first; on arrival we inspect the card and adjust the price if it differs.

Is a single valuable card enough for an offer?

Yes. There is no minimum number of cards; a single card can be enough if its value reaches at least €50.
